SAM resides in London with artist Edward Ihnatowicz’s son, Richard, where last week members of the team visited to evaluate its current state, as well as assess the most appropriate method of producing a 3D scan. A decision was made against dismantling the original sculpture in order to individually scan the components and joints, avoiding any unnecessary wear. Similarly, it has been decided that SAM will not be transported anywhere as part of this process.
During the visit, Chris Cornish from Sample & Hold 3D scanners successfully carried out an initial test scan and for the first time revealed exactly what the contents of the plinth were. It has not yet been decided if these will form part of the reproduction physical model, though it will be recorded digitally.
